Safety
The great distances and volume of running that we do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis precludes us from running in only one location. It would be mind numbing and counter productive to try and do all of our workouts at the school or at a single location. The sheer repetitive nature of our sport and the need for a variety of training terrain and techniques requires us to run in many different places through-out the cross-country season. Because we are surrounded by very busy streets, neighborhoods and residential areas, we have a vital need to adhere to safety principals and practices. We continually remind our athletes to follow the safety guidelines, but having only two or three coaches for 70 to 80 athletes means our vigilance is not enough. We need parents, peers and school staff to present the case of safety with sincerity and regularity. Parents and athletes please do your part to remind each other to follow these guidelines:
Always check the traffic for yourself before crossing any streets. Don't trust the people you are running with to check it for you.
Run as far off the road as possible, away from traffic.
Run single file on busy streets.
Run with teammates and help keep track of each other.
Cross streets at the corners and use the traffic signals.
Follow all traffic lights and rules.
Watch carefully for curbs, rocks, ruts wholes, posts, tree branches or any obstacles that may be hazardous. Be alert and mindful of your running surface and environment.
Help your teammates at all times and inform coaches of any unusual occurrence.
Be considerate of people and their property when running through a residential area.
Watch for loose dogs and avoid them at all cost. If you see one in the distance choose an alternate path to avoid an encounter.
Never argue with or tease pedestrians or children playing.
Do not throw snowballs or any object of any kind.
Run only on public property.
Wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions-as we discuss through out the season.
Use only public restrooms and facilities.
